Sea Kayak Guides

I have been fortunate enough to kayak in many areas in many areas of the world and these sea kayak guides will hopefully provide an idea of the quality of paddling, which is available when visiting.  Clearly they are unlikely to be as accurate and comprehensive as reports written by locals, who may have years of experience of paddling in the area. The guides will indicate some of the better kayaking areas, offering advice on transport, equipment and possible routes.
This is a personal selection of places that I have visited to enjoy quality paddling. Some of the sea kayak guides are based on numerous visits over the years whilst others rely on perhaps just one or two visits. What I can confirm is that I have paddled all of the routes and the information is based on first hand experience.
One of the most significant changes over the years has been the ease of hiring kayaks. When we first started moving away from Jersey in pursuit of our hobby our destinations were limited by where we could either drive to or where it was possible to ship kayaks to in advance. When I first visited Greenland we shipped our kayaks out at the end of April and we got them back at the beginning of November. Effectively to be able to paddle in Greenland for 4 weeks I was without a kayak at home for nearly 5 months.
Interestingly the first time that I hired sea kayaks for a longer trip in a more remote area was  also the first time I arranged a trip completely on the internet, including flights, accommodation and kayak hire.  It was to Alaska in 1998.  There were no more late night telephone calls to cities in different time zones or sending of letters and waiting hopefully for several weeks before you received a reply, from a distant shore.  This was all achieved by the magic of e mail!

Perhaps, at times we spend too much time looking at distant shores failing to notice the gems closer to home. Sark offers high quality paddling, in common with the other Channel Islands.

There is some excellent paddling around the coast of France. Brittany is possibly my favourite area and the tides of Morbihan in southern Brittany are a great place to play.

I think I ignored the Mediterranean for far too long. Greece was the first area that I visited with any regularity. Paddling into Santorini is a particularly memorable experience.

Malta and Gozo are Mediterranean islands, which have captured my heart with some lovely paddling. This is on the southern coast of Comino, between Malta and Gozo.

If you are a sea kayaking vulcanologist then the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily are a must visit destination. This paddling around the continuously active Stromboli.

The Maine Island Trail offers some excellent sea kayaking in the north east United States. From day trips to journey’s lasting several weeks.

Baja, Mexico has to be the place to for some warm (at times hot) weather kayaking. It has to be one of my favourite paddling destinations.

If you want some colder paddling then Greenland is hard to beat.
